Dry eyes are the most common complaint presenting to our eye care practice.
The average American spends about 7-9 hours on a screen and digital device use can make dry eye symptoms worse. Digital device use can decrease the rate at which you blink. This causes your tears to dry up and oil glands in you lids to get blocked.
Most common symptoms of Dry eye are:
Redness | Stinging | Blurry Vision / Burning | Gritty | Excessive
tearing / watery eyes | Sensitivity to light | Itching / Sandy feeling /
scratchy feeling | Foreign body sensation (feeling like something is
always in eye) | Sore eyes or discomfort | Tired eyes / eye fatigue |
Stringy mucus in or around the eyes | Eyes tough to open in the
morning | Contact lenses discomfort | It’s hard to remove contact
lenses at the end of the day | Excessive eye irritation in windy,
smoky, or low humidity conditions
Dry Eye Disease can dramatically impact the quality and comfort of your life. Although over the counter treatments are available, they are often NOT effective and can even make the problem WORSE!
Dr. Kapoor uses leading-edge diagnostic technology like Lipiscan Meibography (Lid imaging), and tear assessment and blink analysis using the Oculus Keratograph to evaluate your eyes and create a comprehensive treatment plan.
LIPISCAN
The most common form of Dry Eye is Evaporative Dry Eye, which affects 9 out of 10 Dry Eye cases. This results from a shortage of oil in your tears caused by a blockage in your eyelid (Meibomian) glands, leading tears to evaporate faster than normal. This lack of tear oil is often referred to as Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).
LipiScan complements our ability to diagnose and treat patients with suspected Meibomian Gland Dysfunction.
LipiScan provides detailed HD images of the meibomian glands and allows us to directly view if their structure is healthy (long, lean, and straight) or if the glands are showing degenerative changes (blockages, shape changes, thickening, shortening or simply dying). Below, you can see an example image of such structural progressive changes that result in an increased severity of dry eye over time.
Kapoor Eye Care is now offering Marco Equinox Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT), the latest in dry eye treatment technology.
Severe Stage of MGD
LipiScan imaging can be easily repeated over time to monitor the glands for changes making it easier to see the progression of the disease
In addition to the LipiScan, we evaluate the QUALITY and QUANTITY of your tears, the FUNCTION of your Meibomian glands, as well as assess the HEALTH of the front surface of your eyes. We specifically check the FUNCTION of your Meibomian glands to see if they are producing a clear “olive-oil-like” liquid, or if the liquid is cloudy, thicker, solid, or if there’s no oil secretion at all.
If the oil is too thick, it’s difficult for the eyelids to spread it evenly over the surface of the eye.
If it gets so thick that the oil blocks and backs up in the gland, the gland slowly but permanently gets damaged and starts to die off.
Our body is not able to repair or regenerate the structure and the gland becomes permanently nonfunctional. The result is irreversible and often severe dry eye.
Dr. Kapoor is committed to the care and non-surgical treatment of many conditions affecting the ocular surface. She is specialized in Dry Eye Disease and continually brings in new cutting-edge technologies for its treatment. She examines and treats patients with dry eye using eye drops, punctal plugs, amniotic membranes and biologic eye drops. Dry eye treatments include the ilux treatment, MIBO Thermoflo, J & J Lipiflow Thermal Pulsation, Marco Low Level Light therapy and Intense Pulse Light. The idea of the treatments is to get your own body to make and secrete oils for your tears. She also evaluates patients with blepharitis, styes, and allergic conjunctivitis. Dr. Kapoor is accepting new patients for evaluation and management of dry eye and other ocular surface diseases.
Lasting & Effective Dry Eye Treatment
Our dry eye program works like therapy, where we aren’t simply prescribing a quick medication, but rather we want to create an individualized solution for each patient. Prior to administering any treatment, we need to get to the root cause in order to offer the most adequate treatment possible
Because of the variety of treatments that can help relieve dry eye symptoms, a dry eye examination is essential to know what treatment to start. For example, prescription drops may help relieve inflammatory tear deficiency, while mild cases of dry eye can benefit from non-prescription treatments including heat masks, lid scrubs, gland debridement, artificial tears, or punctal plugs among others. Most times, holistic treatments are working better because they get your own body working better. Every person is different and Dr. Kapoor will find the best combination of treatments for each individual person.
After gathering the information during your examination, Dr. Kapoor will create a treatment plan that will help you achieve longer-lasting relief. Your treatment plan may include the following:
- Preservative Free Artificial Tears (PFAT)
- Overnight ointments
- Prescription drops – Restasis, Xiidra, Cequa, steroids, antibiotics
- Eyelid hygiene
- Eyelid heat compression
- Punctal plug occlusion
- Dry Eye supplements
- Blinking Exercises
- BlephEx – In office treatment to remove plaque that could be blocking the openings of your meibomian glands, thereby preventing them from functioning properly.
- Low level light therapy (Marco Equinox) – In office, “spa-like” meibomian gland therapy to treat lipid deficiency
- Lipiflow Thermal Pulsation

Irritating, Uncomfortable Eyes
We use our eyes all day long, but we rarely think of them—unless they’re uncomfortable, and then they’re all we think about. Adults might turn to redness-relieving eye drops, while kids often rub their eyes. But neither strategy tackles the true cause of tired, scratchy eyes.
Dry eye is a chronic, common, and uncomfortable condition, impacting more than 16 million Americans. Not only is it irritating, but it can really put a damper on your daily activities. Dry eyes can decrease your quality of life and hinder productivity.
But relief is available! Book an exam today for a comprehensive eye exam to diagnose your dry eye symptoms. If left untreated, dry eye can lead to long-term infections and eye damage down the road. Any time your eyes are uncomfortable, it’s best to pay us a visit and rule out more problematic conditions.

What Is Dry Eye Syndrome?
Dry is exactly what it sounds like—it occurs when your eyes aren’t producing enough lubrication to keep them moist and comfortable.
There are 2 main types of dry eye. The first—and least common—occurs when the eyes simply don’t produce enough tears. The second occurs when the tears are of poor quality.
Decreased Tear Production
Reasons for decreased tear production are varied and might include:
- Contact lens wear
- Normal aging
- Medications such as antihistamines or antidepressants
- Medical conditions such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or Sjögren’s Syndrome
- Recent laser vision correction surgery
Poor-Quality Tears
Good-quality tears depend on a balanced and effective tear film. The tear film is made up of 3 layers—a mucus layer to spread the tears over the surface of the eye, a water layer to hydrate the eye, and an oil layer to keep the water from evaporating too quickly. If there’s an imbalance in the tear film, dry eye syndrome can result.
The tiny glands along the top and bottom edges of the eyelids, called the meibomian glands are responsible for producing the oil layer of your tear film. Blockages in these glands can cause a reduction in the amount of oil produced, leading to dry eyes.
When we diagnose your dry eye syndrome, we’ll also look at the condition of your meibomian glands and recommend treatment options if they’re not functioning properly.
